For many years, kisses were the only sexual acts to be seen in mainstream American movies. Then, in the 1960s and 1970s, American cinema “grew up” in response to the sexual revolution, and movie audiences came to expect more knowledge about what happened between the sheets. In Screening Sex, the renowned film scholar Linda Williams investigates how sex acts have been represented on screen for more than a century and, just as important, how we have watched and experienced those representations. Whether examining the arch artistry of Last Tango in Paris, the on-screen orgasms of Jane Fonda, or the anal sex of two cowboys in Brokeback Mountain, Williams illuminates the forms of pleasure and vicarious knowledge derived from screening sex.
Combining stories of her own coming of age as a moviegoer with film history, cultural history, and readings of significant films, Williams presents a fascinating history of the on-screen kiss, a look at the shift from adolescent kisses to more grown-up displays of sex, and a comparison of the “tasteful” Hollywood sexual interlude with sexuality as represented in sexploitation, Blaxploitation, and avant-garde films. She considers Last Tango in Paris and Deep Throat, two 1972 films unapologetically all about sex; In the Realm of the Senses, the only work of 1970s international cinema that combined hard-core sex with erotic art; and the sexual provocations of the mainstream movies Blue Velvet and Brokeback Mountain. She describes art films since the 1990s, in which the sex is aggressive, loveless, or alienated. Finally, Williams reflects on the experience of screening sex on small screens at home rather than on large screens in public. By understanding screening sex as both revelation and concealment, Williams has written the definitive study of sex at the movies.

Το swinging, με διαφορετικές ονομασίες και παραλλαγές, εμφανίστηκε στην ανώτερη κοινωνική τάξη της Αγγλίας και της Γαλλίας τον 17o και 18ο αιώνα και διαδόθηκε σε θρησκευτικές, κατά βάση, κοινότητες της Αμερικής τον 19ο αιώνα, ιδίως στην «Oneida Community» στην πολιτεία της Νέα Υόρκης μεταξύ 1848 και 1879 με την επικράτηση του πολύπλοκου γάμου, μετά την κατάργηση του οποίου τα ζευγάρια συνέχισαν την κοινή ζωή τους με τον τελευταίο ερωτικό σύντροφο, συνάπτοντας παραδοσιακό γάμο. Οι «Τελειοθήρες», όπως αυτοπροσδιορίζονταν, πίστευαν ότι ο Ιησούς είχε επιστρέψει στη Γη το 70 μ.Χ.
Οι γυναίκες στην αυτάρκη κοινότητα με 306 μέλη και μικρότερα παραρτήματα σε όμορες πολιτείες, είχαν προνόμια άγνωστα για την εποχή στην υπόλοιπη χώρα. Οι σαραντάρες αναλάμβαναν τη μύηση των νεαρών ανδρών στο σεξ και αντιστρόφως οι μεγαλύτεροι ηλικιακά άνδρες τη μύηση των νεαρών γυναικών. Το συναινετικό σεξ κυριαρχούσε και, αν μια γυναίκα έφερνε στη ζωή παιδί άγνωστου πατέρα, αυτό έπαιρνε το όνομα της μητέρας του.
Οι Γάλλοι echangistes που επίσης είναι γνωστοί ως libertins και το swinging ως libertinage, έλκουν την καταγωγή τους από τη Γαλλική Επανάσταση του 1789.

Το swinging, όπως το γνωρίζουμε με τη σημερινή μορφή του, είναι ανεκτίμητη αξία του δυτικού πολιτισμού, γιατί μόνο σε αυτόν θα μπορούσε να ευδοκιμήσει, σε ελεύθερες κοινωνίες απαλλαγμένες από τη θρησκοληψία και τις παραδοξολογίες.
Όταν στις 3 Σεπτεμβρίου 1938 ένα νεαρό ζευγάρι από την Αμερική, ο Paul και η Terri Lyday από τη Βόρειο Καρολίνα, για το οποίο ελάχιστες πληροφορίες είδαν το φως της δημοσιότητας κυκλοφόρησε την περίφημη «The Lyday List», τον πρώτο δωρεάν πολυγραφημένο κατάλογο Αμερικανών πολιτών που ενδιαφέρονταν για συναντήσεις σεξουαλικού προσανατολισμού, σε μια κοινωνία που μαστιζόταν από τον σκοταδισμό, την άγνοια και την παραδοξολογία, έγραφαν ιστορία. Η λίστα αυτή κυκλοφορούσε τουλάχιστο μέχρι το 1975! Αυτοί ήταν Swingers και άφησαν ανεξίτηλο το στίγμα τους στον χώρο.
Σχόλια χρηστών απαξιωτικά για το καλύτερο ερωτικό παιχνίδι, όπως «το νέο παραγωγικό μοντέλο της χώρας» και «η πτώση του δυτικού πολιτισμού» – ο τίτλος παραπέμπει στο δίτομο έργο του Γερμανού ιστορικού και φιλοσόφου Oswald Spengler (1880-1936) «η Παρακμή της Δύσης» – είναι ενδεικτικά της στοχευμένης παραπληροφόρησης των ΜΜΕ. Αν δεν υπήρχε ο δυτικός πολιτισμός, το swinging δεν θα ευδοκιμούσε, γιατί αυτή η μορφή σεξουαλικού πλουραλισμού απευθύνεται σε ώριμα σεξουαλικά άτομα που έχουν ανατραφεί με τις αξίες του.
